THE FLOATING MEN'S JEFF HOLMES LAUNCHES FALL SOLO TOUR
ACCLAIMED STATESMAN OF AMERICANA LIT-ROCK DEBUTS "NO CLOCKS, NO CALENDARS" GULLAH INSPIRED LYRICS AND SOUTHERN LITERATURE ROCKED INTO A TWO PART OPERA
Nashville, TN, July 2008: Front man Jeff Holmes of indie cult legends The Floating Men will take to the road solo this fall to debut music from the band's upcoming 2009 opera and album, "No Clocks, No Calendars". The 30+ city tour will include venues ranging from clubs, theaters, art houses and house concerts. Following Holmes' tour, the band will undertake recording the entire two hour opera.
"No Clocks, No Calendars" marks one of the band's most compelling and ambitious projects to date, combining smart indie-rock with all the haunt and weight that has lead the band to be cast as "emerging Southern Literature icons, and perhaps the most quietly influential indie-cult sleeper band since The Velvet Underground."*
In concert Holmes will present the opera in two acts and librettos following the storyline with stage direction and character sketches will be available.
"The show is set roughly in the year 1973 and takes place in a sea island beach town off the lower South Carolina coast in the heart of Gullah country, where the legends, history and folklore are rich and colorful, but with modern conveniences such as cell phones to give it an 'outside-of-time' quality," notes Holmes.
The story centers on a handful of townies during a single summer, the peak tourist season, from Memorial Day through Labor Day and follows their loves, heartbreaks and personal struggles with touches of tenderness, adult humor and tragedy. Their carefree beach life is disrupted when an ancient evil spirit, based loosely on the Gullah folklore figures the "hag" and the "plat-eye," secretly kills one of the characters and takes over the body as a host and plans to kill again.
"The evil spirit steals the souls of its victims by appearing to them as their true love, so, somebody's lover is dead, and their body has been taken over by an evil spirit, but nobody knows who it is.," Holmes reveals. "There is no violence, there is however, adult content including language and marijuana references - it's 1973 for crying out loud - and tasteful, playful, but adult sexual content, including a strong attitude in favor of sexual liberties."
